One of the most impressing things I’ve stumbled on last week  is the laser based keystroke sniffer. Using equipment costing about 80$. By aiming the laser to the keyboard and due to the vibration it causes when hitting a specific key it is possible to determine which key it was. Read it here ….


Ehud Tenenbaum caught 1998 by the FBI and received one year of probation after accessing government computers in the US and Israel. In the meantime he returned to his old passion and is now suspected of hacking into banks, credit and debit card firms and withdrawing about 1.5m USD. Read it here ….

    That is pretty crazy monitor key strikes via lasers. One would think this would vary between users. For instance I hit my keyboard with more force than other people. The vibrations would be different as a result.

    i remember there was a similar article about a keylogger using the built in microphone that analyzed the sounds when striking the keys and assigning a key sound (vibrations) a letter. the laser registers a vibration by using a sound box. actually the same principle but still impressive.
